Kurtz, Haycock Recognized

At 2017 Milestones In Ministry

Each year, the District’s Ministerial Leadership Team, through its Pastoral Support Committee, recognizes “milestones in ministry.” Congregations often do a good job in recognizing tenure milestones. We also know that a minister’s years of ordination to the set-apart ministry are significant chapters. Areas of service for the ordained extend beyond parish ministry and include chaplains, counselors, biblical professors, district and national staff and other specialized ministries.

Each of the ministers listed below was recognized during the Milestones In Ministry dinner that preceded the opening of the 2017 District Conference on Oct. 27. In attendance were 20 pastors at the 50-plus years of ordination and at five-year milestones since ordination. Combined, they represented 803 years of ordained ministry. C.C. Kurtz of Evergreen Church of the Brethren, at age 92, led in years since ordination at 70 years. Cecil Haycock, 91 years old, was recognized for 62 years since ordination and still in active ministry as pastor of the Walker's Chapel Church of the Brethren.

Tara Hornbacker, Bethany Theological Seminary professor, reflected on humor in the Bible, related humorous incidents from her own ministry and called on pastors in the audience to share funny pastoral moments.
